The Graduate Internship Scheme is a collaboration between the University of Sunderland, a recent Graduate and a regional SME. The Scheme has been designed to benefit both the Graduate and the company, ensuring that the Graduate takes the first steps on the career ladder whilst the company benefits from the Graduates enthusiasm, expertise and up to date knowledge.  



The Internship is a full time position.

Nebula Labs is a software house based in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the North East of England, offering mobile app development, web platform development, and bespoke software development for ambitious startups and entrepreneurs, and forward-thinking SMEs.


We take a unique engineering-driven approach to ensure that every solution we develop genuinely solves problems, has the potential to scale, and adds value to our clients’ business.

The Role:

We’re looking for a highly motivated individual with a real passion for problem solving and software development to join our team as a Backend Web Developer.

You will be joining a relatively young startup, with a small, extremely hard working team. We are constantly working on new projects. As such, you will have the opportunity to learn new skills and develop cutting-edge mobile applications both for in-house products and for a range of exciting and interesting clients, regionally and nationally.

The average work life of the successful candidate will encompass the following:

Overall responsibility for the backend development on a particular project (usually working in a small team alongside a frontend engineer and DevOps specialist)

You will likely be required to oversee the project from the planning stage - where you will help divide the project into key tasks - through to the delivery of the project to the client - here, the developer will be expected to account for their work and provide troubleshooting assistance as well as general guidance with user testing.

More broadly, you will have the following tasks/responsibilities:

•    Developing robust and scaleable web applications and platforms

•    Working with APIs - both publicly available and proprietary.

•    Implementing formal testing process that relate to building web applications and platforms.

•    Working with team on R&D projects in relation to industry trends - such as Big Data.


Academically - a computer science degree background or similar would be ideal, however. Graduates with suitable experience from other disciplines would certainly be considered.


Essential requirements (we require demonstrable experience of at least ONE of the following programming skills):

•    iOS app development - Swift programming language

•    Android app development - Kotlin and/or Java programming language


We also require the following:

•    Experience of working in a team

•    Experience of project management

•    Experience of problem solving and analysis within a project environment


Desirable requirements (Not essential, but would be advantageous):

•    iOS app development - Objective-C programming language

•    Web development - Python programming language (with Django Framework is even more advantageous)

•    Experience of working under Agile software development methodologies

•    Experience of developing and publishing mobile application onto a public directory (App Store, Play Store etc.)
