The Graduate Internship Scheme is a collaboration between the University of Sunderland, a recent Graduate and a regional SME. The Scheme has been designed to benefit both the Graduate and the company, ensuring that the Graduate takes the first steps on the career ladder whilst the company benefits from the Graduates enthusiasm, expertise and up to date knowledge.  


The Internship is a full-time position.


The Organisation:

Metaltech Services Limited (MSL) is a UKAS accredited metallurgical analysis and mechanical test house. Originally formed in 1985 primarily as a metallurgical consultancy firm; in 2009 MSL concentrated on extending the range of services and products they offer within surface engineering, mechanical property evaluation and determining the cause of mechanical failures. They offer a full range mechanical testing services to ensure metals, materials, welds and products are fit for purpose. MSL are also actively involved in failure investigations, training and offer a consultancy service. They are committed to investing in the latest machinery and computer technology to compete confidently within their market.

The Role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented graduate to join Metaltech Services Limited, working within the role of Product and Process Development Engineer. As the successful candidate, you will hold a degree in a relevant discipline, for example, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Materials Science or Engineering, will have, proven hands-on experience with mechanical and/or electrical control systems and will be both capable and willing to perform various manual tasks involved with factory work. This might involve safely moving large quantities of heavy objects, moving large pallets long distances with a pallet jack, sorting incoming materials, housekeeping, etc.

Daily tasks within the role will be varied but will include: 

  • Planning and carrying out testing to meet customer requirements
  • Ensuring the laboratory is running effectively and adhering to the UKAS 17025 quality management system in place
  • Undertaking a continuous flow of work through effective planning
  • Successfully developing products and processes to allow for continuous improvement, both in the services MSL offer and the quality and speed of work
  • Ad hoc duties, as appropriate.
