The Organisation:
mediaHUB is the University’s innovative digital publishing and broadcasting space and home for its award winning Spark Sunderland and Fashion North covering local news, sport, fashion and arts and entertainment.
Main Purpose of Role:
Working as a Graduate Intern within the mediaHUB, the main purpose of this role is to:
- Assist in the management of the mediaHUB website, Spark Sunderland’s online platform (sparksunderland.com) and Fashion North covering fashion, news and arts & entertainment.
- Assist in the management of the website’s associated social media platforms in co-operation with other interns, the Spark team, staff and student editors
- Inspire, coordinate, edit and publish student contributions to Spark Sunderland and Fashion North in combination with student editors and staff
- Perform administrative duties as required by the mediaHUB
- Newsroom manager
- Arrange presentations and workshops for students to encourage them to create content for the websites
- Manage effectively the day-to-day administration of the mediaHUB, including filing, responding to emails, dealing with post, etc.
- Create content for faculty social media platforms and managing channels in line with faculty strategy
- Support faculty recruitment activity through school and college visits, open days and other activity which may include flexibility in working patterns
- Liaise regularly with academic teams to provide support to curriculum
Special Circumstances:
Applicants must already have the legal right to work in the UK for the length of the contract.
Qualifications and Professional Memberships:
Essential:
• A Degree Level Qualification obtained from the University of Sunderland recently
Key Knowledge and Expertise:
Key Knowledge and Expertise:
• Ability to create and edit online text and rich media content
• Good use of the English language
• NCTJ media law qualification or equivalent knowledge of media law and ethical guidelines
• A good understanding of SEO techniques and social media
• Ability to manage relationships with external organisations and businesses
• Knowledge of innovative storytelling techniques and a willingness to experiment with new tools and share findings.
• Experience of general office administration
• Strong project management ability
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and use own initiative
• Ability to work accurately under pressure and deliver to tight deadlines
• Problem solving and decision making ability
• Proven ability to use a wide variety of IT packages including Word, Excel, Power Point, internet and e-mail
Experience:
• A degree in journalism would be an advantage
• Experience of work based placement/projects eg. journalism placement at newspaper, magazine or website
• Previous experience of working within a team and supporting colleagues to successfully achieve team objectives
• Experience of working with live blogging software
Competencies:
• Ability to communicate effectively in both a written and verbal format
• Ability to listen and interpret information
• Ability to resolve problems and provide solutions
• Ability to work within a team environment as well as being able to work using own initiative as necessary
• Ability to plan and prioritise own workload
