You are invited to apply for the role of Research Assistant to work with the IMCAN study: Improving Muslim Women’s Uptake of Cancer Screening, funded by Cancer Research UK.

Cancer screening saves lives by finding cancer at an early stage, but Muslim women are less likely to undergo breast, bowel or cervical cancer screening. In 2021, in partnership with Muslim women in Scotland, we designed a workshop for Muslim women to promote breast, bowel and cervical screening. The workshop included a group discussion, led by other Muslim women, about participants’ challenges related to cancer screening. The workshop also included videos of Muslim women discussing their experiences of cancer screening and treatment, a presentation by a female religious scholar about how cancer screening fits with an Islamic perspective, and a female GP explaining the importance of cancer screening.

We then ran the workshop twice and qualitatively evaluated the workshop, which was well received. We will now build on this pilot study and want to know whether the workshop improves cancer screening uptake among Muslim women more broadly. This requires a larger study, a trial. This feasibility trial will help us to understand if a larger trial to test the effectiveness of the workshop will work, or if we need to make changes.

The main purpose of the Research Assistant is to support recruitment of research participants both in the North-East of England and Scotland.

This is a part-time-time role (1 day per week) until the 31st of December 2025. You will be part of relevant communities and have existing links.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Act as the Recruitment Lead for the project.
  • Facilitate recruitment of research participants.
  • Facilitate the recruitment and maintenance of the Public Involvement Community Engagement (PICE) group.
  • Facilitate links to relevant communities in the North East of England and Scotland.
  • Contribute to relevant research meetings.
  • Contribute to all aspects of the research where relevant.

You will be working with a diverse team from multiple institutions and relevant community-based organisations, and as Research Assistant you will be a key member of the team. The project is led by Dr Floor Christie-de Jong, who can be contacted for an informal chat about the role on: floor.christie@sunderland.ac.uk
